Chapter Eleven

Kate was stuck in the hospital for four days and was going mad by the time the doctor finally released her. When Jessica picked Kate up from the hospital, Kate insisted that they go by the marina so she could check on the repairs. Kate was shocked when they got out of the car and saw two dozen men and women working on various tasks. “Where did all these people come from?”

“They’re mine.” Jessica held on to Kate’s arm as she walked down the slant of the gangway to the main dock. “I thought it would be faster to bring one of my teams from Atlanta instead of wasting time searching for a decent crew down here.”

They stopped at the orange cones blocking the fuel dock. A small floating barge crane sat in the harbor, and the crew was strapping the waterlogged section of floating dock so it could be hoisted out of the water. A brand new section sat waiting on the other end of the barge, ready to be installed in its place.

“I’m sorry it took so long to get the dock section and pumps here. I tried my best to get the fuel dock back up and running by Saturday, but the pumps had to be shipped from Oregon.”

Kate watched as the old section of dock was pulled from the water. “It’s been four days since the fire, and you’ve got people working on a Sunday. You have nothing to apologize for.”

“We worked out a system to get fuel from the maintenance yard, but I didn’t want to block the harbor with the barge yesterday. The fuel company has promised to have the fuel pumps installed today, so you should be able to get the docks inspected tomorrow morning and be back up to speed.”

“How did you get all this done so quickly? It took weeks to get the dock people out here last year when I had to replace another section.”

Jessica grinned. “This company has installed a lot of docks on my properties and knows if they do me a favor, I might remember it when the time comes to award new projects.”

Two new fuel pumps sat on pallets next to where they stood. Kate walked over and took a closer look. “Are these digital pumps?”

“Yes. There’s no telling how much fuel you’ve been giving away by using the old wheel gauge pumps. They only measured to a tenth of a gallon, the new ones measure to the hundredth of a gallon.”

Kate looked confused. “How much difference can that possibly make?”

“A hell of a lot actually.” Jessica pulled a notebook from her back pocket. “Let’s say you pump one-point-zero-nine gallons. The old pumps only rotate the wheel after the next increment is met, so it would only read as if you pumped one gallon. It doesn’t sound like a lot until you do the math. Let’s say you made three thousand sales a year for five years—and that’s probably a conservative estimate. At the end
